Yes, that is true. I did say it was rough and ready, though I should have added that it is also not my code. I think it's Debra Dalgleish's if memory serves. I will try and revise for 2007, but it won't be any time soon.

Whilst I agree with the above in terms of efficiency it should be noted that the above assertion assumes no independent grouping is required... if it is then the caches must be independent (at least 1 per grouping preference).

Unless I am mistaken, the individual pivot arrangements has no effect on the source data and vice versa. It is more like queries made from a table. The filter and groupings made on queries do not affect the table or other queries made from the same table in any way.

A pivot table is just another kind of query. In MS Access it is called a cross tab query.

If I don't understand you well, I am sorry and I stand corrected.

If you group items in a field in a pivot table, that grouping becomes part of the cache, so would affect all tables built off that cache. That may or may not be a good thing.

@nsenor udofa

I think aflatoon has made my point more coherently than I did... and I agree that the fact that a cache is shared can be good/bad depending on circumstance but it's something to be aware of.

Just to reiterate (so we're all on the same page) in terms of hypothetical scenario ...

You have 1 data set and wish to generate 2 separate Pivots:

- pivot 1: Groups date by Month only
- pivot 2: Groups by both Month & Year.

To do the above requires two independent Caches.

Obviously I am just repeating what has already been said but the point is valid and can cause confusion... particularly for those using XL2007+

If we were using XL2007 (or above) and were to create the above Pivots via "Insert -> Pivot Table" route we would no longer get the option to create independent caches at the point of creating the 2nd Pivot - Excel will automatically assign to the same cache*
(you can invoke the Pivot Wizard to create the 2nd Pivot and get the warning per earlier version)

Sorry about this mix up. I was thinking grouping in terms of subtotaling and field arrangements not grouping dates. Your point is very valid. And thanks for this enlightenment.

Is it not possible to group by month & year for both pivots and remove the year field for pivot 1? I have tried it and it seems to work with one cache for both.

I'd not noticed that before !

Though separate caches is arguably the more robust approach it follows that if you know the grouping won't need to alter post set up then a single cache is viable*
*we're referring only to Date based Grouping

Thanks - that's my "one thing learnt for the day" already !

Although it's a simple workaround for dates, the issue remains with other groupings, such as banding numbers, or creating manual groups within a field if you want different members of the group in different tables.
