Default Unable to Save Projects

------ Register to get rid of these "In Post" ads! ------

I'm using office project 2007, and i've been using it for sometime.
However, recently when i wanted to use it for my school work again, i
realised that i couldn't save my project. The "save" icon, on the top left
hand, it just cant seem to work. The icon is still shown there but just that
i cant click it cause it is not 'lited' up. I need help!

That's usually the case if Microsoft Project has not been activated. Check
out Help > Activate Product and see if that shows the product as activated
or not....

Hard to tell what's wrong from here... may be related to something in
Windows unrelated to Project. Perhaps simply un-intall and re-install
Project from the original CD, and then be sure to activate directly
after that install. This process will clear out and reset system-level
settings in the registry and hopefully fix. There is no special "fix
the save button" method. Sorry.

Hi NYPStudent,

Did you install the trial version of Project? If so, it "times out"
after the end of the trial period. Check Help > About the see what it says.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Julies,

I dont think i've installed the trial version as i've taken this installer
from my school and tehy burnt it into a cd.
However, i've found out a new problem.
Somehow when i try to delete my office project 2007, it states an error.
It stated," Setup cannot continue because a required file is either
corrupted or not available. Run setup again from original disc or download
location".
Afterwards i tried placing the original disc into my com and it states the
same reason when it tries to run it.
I've tried the same cd on my friend's laptop and it works.
Please advise.

Given you state that the CD works on your friend's machine but not your
machine suggests a flaw with your machine. Hardware and/or software.
Perhaps malware? All the Windows software up to date? Probably need to
get some assistance of a systems-orientated friend or help from your
school? Not much to do with Project, probably.

Hello NYPStudent,

As Rob notes, if you are able to install the software to your friend's
computer but the same disk won't install to yours -- it sounds as though
there is an issue with your computer. Ensure you are attempting to
install with administrator rights, but also check the machine for
malware or other issues. Particularly as it was working before, but now
stops, that would lead you to think it was a recent change to the
computer. Were there other programs recently installed or uninstalled?
Did you create a restore point prior to those changes? Can you "roll
back" the computer to the restore point and successfully install?

Hi Julies & Schneider,

Thanks for the feedback.
I don't think i've installed the trial version of Project because i've
gotten the installer from my school itself. They have burnt it into a CD for
me to use it.
However, i've just found out a new problem. I tried to delete my Office
Project through the Change/Remove Programs on Control Panel, but when i do so
it prompt an error. The error stated," Setup cannot continue because a
required file is either corrupted or not available. Run Setup again from
original source disc or download location".
I've tried to re-install it from the original CD but similar error was
stated once again.
On the other hand, i tried it on my friend's laptop it works just fine.
And i need the gantt chart by the day after tommorrow.
Please advise!!

Same advice as before. Most likely something wrong with your computer.
How it got messed up is a mystery only you can investigate. It surely is
related to a change (recent or otherwise) which you did or was did to
you (malware).

No telling what software provided by the school. My understanding is
that some schools do give the Trial Version (which has a limited life
span on the computer) for courses since it's free. I have no knowledge
of what licenses are available to schools or your school; talk to you
school to find out what they gave you. I'm sure your instructor can
explain to you what license they gave you. If the trial version (which
you can also download from Microsoft) it has a limited life span.

The point of projects is to deliver the deliverable. Using Microsoft
Project is rarely a deliverable. This is now a learning experience for
your in project management. Your deliverable is a Gantt Chart to be
delivered the day after tomorrow. Before you started this project you
had a *risk* which hopefully you recognised but you chose to "accept":
"Because I am using a computer, the computer may some how or another
fail due to file corruption, malware, hardware failure, or other means
which could lead to me not having the right resource to achieve the
course deadlines". This risk has now come true and you have an *issue*:
"My computer does not work I do not know how to hit the course deadline".

I would recommend you stop worrying about your computer, focus on the
deliverable. See if you can use your friend's computer. It apparently
works.

Then, later, fix your computer--buy a non-trial license Project, or use
Windows System Restore to attempt repair, or (what often safes most time
and avoids having to figure it out), re-build Windows and applications
on the machine and restore data from backup. Something broke you computer.
