When I'm addressing an email in outlook and press "check names", if it does

not find a match it brings up the list of names from the global address list
only. Is there a way for the search to look for matches in both the global
address list AND the outlook address book -> contacts?

You can set Outlook to check your contacts first and then the Global Address
list. I don't know which version of Outlook you're using, the instructions
may vary from version to version.

Thanks for the response. I have seen where I can change it to look first at
one vs. the other but I want it took look through both when I do a "check
names". Any thoughts?

It should look through one first, then the other.

it's not looking through both. if it does not find it in the one you've
identified to be the primary list, it brings up the "check names" dialog
window and I have to click on "show more names" and switch to the other
address book.

My global address list is currently the primary one. I've done this before
but can't remember how to change it to be the outlook address book. do you
know how this is done?

Just so you know, Outlook no longer uses an address book. It simply has a
contact folder that's marked to show as an address book.

When you open Outlook, are you viewing both your standard and advanced
toolbars? In that case you'll see the little address book icon, usually to
the right of the Organize button. Click on that, then click on Tools >
Options. That brings up the Addressing window where you can set the order of
contact lists/address books that Outlook uses. Set your contacts to be first
then the GAL (Global Address List).
