Default Can't Open or Compose Mail

I have a PC with Windows XP Home on it. When I used PC Mover from a Windows
98 computer it tried to load Outlook over the top of it. I uninstalled
Outlook and re-installed Outlook Express with Internet Explorer 7. I set up
the e-mail accounts and can receive e-mail and look at it in the viewer, but
I can not open an e-mail or create an e-mail. I received a message that said
there was a problem with the Address book. So I went to add or remove
programs then add or remove windows component and removed Outlook Express. I
then reloaded IE7 that includes Outlook Express and nothing changed. I need
help please.

Outlook Express is a part of IE6, not IE7. Do any of the following fit the
error message? If not, please post it verbatim.

Courtesy of Michael Santovec:
http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm

All of those have the same cause. Something is screwed up with your address
book.

It could be any of several specific problems, which include:
- corrupted WAB file
- corrupted or mismatched DLL files for the address book
- having OE set to use the Outlook98/2000+ contacts instead of the WAB
file and there is something wrong at the Outlook end

For specifics, take a look at:

Is there any way that I can just download Outlook Express without losing IE7
or do I just download IE6 with Outlook Express and then re-load IE7 after
express is working?

IE6 and OE6 are already on your machine. IE7 just overlays IE6. You said you
unchecked OE in Add/Remove Windows Components. It must be checked to work.

Please post the error message in its entirety. You can left click on it to
highlight and then right click to copy and then paste it into this thread.

Default Re: Can't Open or Compose Mail

The behavior has nothing to do with IE7. It has everything to do with
having OL installed but using OE as your Mail Client.

• Do you have this Registry key?...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4

• If not, STOP; If so, is there a DWORD named UseOutlook (NB: no space) and
is its value set to 1 (one)?

• If not, STOP; If so, Address Book is configured to share contacts with
Outlook, even if you don't use it (can happen with the install of Office).
Change the value to 0 (zero) and all should be well. (If that DWORD is not
present, don't create it, and don't alter any other DWORD values.)

Note that any changes (additions, deletions, edits) made while sharing was
enabled will not be available (displayed) in Address Book when sharing is
disabled.

Okay.

When I try to compose a new mail message I get the following: "The Address
Book failed to load. Outlook Express is incorrectly configured, please
re-install."

When I double click on a received e-mail to open it I get the following:
"There was an error opening this message. An error has occured."

Thanks

Most of the links refer to Windows 95 and 98. Do they also apply to window XP
(XP Home is what I am running)?
